NC GreenPower

French Broad EMC has joined other select electric cooperatives, municipal electric providers and investor-owned utilities throughout North Carolina to offer electricity customers the opportunity to support renewable energy, carbon offset projects and providing grants for educational solar PV installations at K-12 schools.

Help NC GreenPower protect your environment.
NC GreenPower is an independent, nonprofit program working to provide more green power from renewable energy sources to North Carolina. Green power is a cleaner energy alternative to traditional fossil fuels. Using renewable energy sources such as wind, solar and organic matter is the best way to protect the environment now and ensure adequate energy supply for the future. Initiated by the NC Utilities Commission (NCUC), NC GreenPower was launched by Advanced Energy in October 2003 to encourage the development of renewable energy from sources like the sun, wind, water, and organic matter. NC GreenPower Solar Schools was introduced in April 2015 to support educational renewable energy projects in local communities. The pilot program used a portion of donations as grants for the installation of solar PV systems at schools, giving teachers valuable tools to educate students about renewable energy.

You have the power to make a difference.
For as little as $4 a month, you can help NC GreenPower build up the supply of green energy. As of January 1, 2020, donations from the Mass Market renewable energy product will continue to fund both the Solar+ Schools program and local renewable energy. A portion of every donation, rather than the current even split, will fund the purchase of RECs. The block size will increase from 50 kWh to 125 kWh of renewable energy from eligible green power generators across the state; the remaining donation will support the installation of small (3-5 kW) solar PV projects at selected schools. Please visit their website for more information:

For your convenience, your voluntary contribution will be added to your monthly French Broad EMC electric bill. To help NC GreenPower keep administrative costs low, electric utilities around the state have volunteered to collect contributions and send the entire amount directly to NC GreenPower.
